Practicing 'to' and reported speech

Se practicó cómo expresar propósito con to y for y cómo contar lo que otra persona dijo. La profesora trabajó el orden de las palabras, las formas verbales y frases de la vida cotidiana.

Resumen

In this lesson you practiced using 'to' and 'for' with verbs and objects, and worked on converting direct speech into reported speech. The tutor corrected word order and verb forms while you practiced sentences and short roleplay-style exchanges.

Using 'to' and 'for' with verbs

  • Practiced sentences like 'I went to the shop to buy bread' and 'I need money to take a taxi'
  • Corrected examples: 'This knife is used to cut vegetables' and 'Scissors are for cutting paper'

Reported speech practice

  • Converted direct lines into reported speech: 'Tom said that he was hungry'
  • Practiced time-reference changes: 'I will finish my homework tomorrow' → 'he said he would finish the next day'

Everyday vocabulary and short actions

  • Used everyday verbs and nouns: buy, call, study, taxi, cafe, coat, bag, phone
  • Worked on short functional phrases: 'let's meet at the cafe' and 'I called my friend to ask a question'

Para recordar

Reported speech

In reported speech, use said/told with an appropriate object, often backshift tenses and modals, and change pronouns and time expressions to fit the new context. Ejemplos

  • Tom said that he was hungry.
  • Ben said that he would finish his homework the next day.
Purpose infinitives and for

Use to + base verb for an action’s purpose; use for + noun or gerund, especially after expressions such as be used for. Ejemplos

  • She studies to improve her English.
  • This knife is used for cutting vegetables.
Apuntes de la clase en español

Correcciones, pronunciación y práctica preparadas a partir de esta clase. No las escribió tu profesora.

Patrones y correcciones

  • To + verbo base: «She studies to improve her English»; «I called my friend to ask a question».
  • For + sustantivo: «She needs some money for a new coat».
  • For + -ing para la función de un objeto: «Scissors are for cutting paper». El chat conserva «this bag is used for carrying books».
  • Artículo con sustantivo singular contable: «A camera is used for taking photos», con a antes de camera.
  • Presente continuo: «They are watching a film», para una acción en curso. Movie es otra opción habitual en Estados Unidos.

Ampliación de la clase: estilo indirecto

El chat registra «Tom said (that) he was hungry» y «Laura said she needed my phone». Said puede introducir la información; told necesita destinatario: «My parents told me that they were watching a film». Los cambios de pronombres, tiempo y lugar dependen del contexto; no deben aplicarse mecánicamente. Could lleva verbo base: could meet, no could met.

Después describir qué están haciendo dos personas: «They are watching a movie».

Tarea y materiales
