Using time words

En esta clase con Alianna J. seguiste practicando cómo unir ideas con conectores de tiempo, causa y contraste. Las fuentes son los insights automáticos de Preply y el chat de la clase; no hay grabación completa ni documentos adjuntos, así que no se puede comprobar toda la conversación.

Resumen

In this lesson you practiced talking about past events, causes, and sequences using time words (because, although, before, after, when, once, as soon as). The tutor corrected sentence order and verb forms and you practiced short connected sentences about daily events and plans.

Talking about causes and contrasts

  • Practiced using 'because' to explain reasons for actions
  • Practiced using 'although' and 'however' to show contrast

Ordering events with time words

  • Practiced 'before' and 'after' to put actions in order
  • Practiced 'when', 'once' and 'as soon as' for linked events

Correcting verb forms and simple past

  • Corrected past tense verbs (wake → woke, go → went) in sentences
  • Practiced short sequences: 'I woke up late, so I...'

Para recordar

Time clauses

Time clauses can begin with before, after, when, while, once, or as soon as. For future meaning, use present tense in the time clause. Ejemplos

  • Once I finish university, I will look for a job.
  • Please turn off the light after you leave the room.
Because vs. because of

Use “because” before a clause with a subject and verb; use “because of” before a noun phrase. Ejemplos

  • The match was canceled because of the storm.
  • I stayed at home because I needed to finish a project.
Apuntes de la clase en español

Correcciones, pronunciación y práctica preparadas a partir de esta clase. No las escribió tu profesora.

Temas y práctica

  • Conectores de tiempo: before (antes de), after (después de), when (cuando), once (una vez que) y as soon as (tan pronto como). Cuando la frase habla del futuro, después del conector se usa presente: “When the package arrives, please put it by the front door.” / “They will book the hotel as soon as they decide on the date.” En el chat, la tutora escribió “reservarán” para esta última idea.
  • Before + verbo: la tutora mostró dos formas equivalentes en el chat: before you start y before starting. Ejemplo de la clase: “Before you start the computer, make sure it is connected to the charger.” También tradujo cerciorarse/verificar como verify; make sure es la forma más habitual de decir «asegurate».
  • Causa: because + sujeto y verbo; because of + sustantivo. “The match was canceled because of the storm” (tormenta = storm, según el chat). En la frase “they were late because of the motorway was closed”, la tutora remarcó en el chat “the motorway WAS CLOSED”: como hay verbo, corresponde because, sin of.
  • Contraste: although y however. Celeste escribió “However” en el chat y la tutora dio el modelo “Although it was very early, the shops were already open.” Although une dos ideas en una oración; however suele empezar una oración nueva.
  • Rutinas: el sistema destacó “I always check the weather forecast before I plan a weekend trip”, en línea con la semana 9 del plan (presente simple frente a presente continuo).

Correcciones

  • “I didn't go to the gym because I had headache” → “…because I had a headache.” Headache es contable y necesita a.
  • “The apartment is small, it has a lovely balcony” → “The apartment is small, but it has a lovely balcony.” Dos oraciones no se unen solo con coma. También vale “Although the apartment is small, it has a lovely balcony.”
  • “Once I finish university, look for a job” → “Once I finish university, I'll look for a job.” Falta el sujeto y el futuro en la oración principal.
  • “After I packed my suitcase.” → “After I packed my suitcase, I left for the airport.” Una frase con after sola queda incompleta; la segunda parte es la que propuso la corrección automática.
  • “I was doing my homework after I watched a series” → “I did my homework after watching a series.” Para una acción terminada se usa pasado simple. “After I watched a series, I did my homework” también es correcto.
  • “We went to sleep at 2am” aparece en el chat al comienzo de la clase como modelo de la tutora.

Vocabulario y variantes

Palabras de la clase: headache, restart, connect to, forecast, magazine, package, everyone, delay, lovely, passport, arrive y decide. Takeaway y motorway son británicas; en inglés estadounidense se dice takeout y highway. Las tarjetas usan la forma estadounidense y mencionan la británica como alternativa. El ejemplo automático de delay (“The meeting will delay until next week”) no es correcto y no se usa; lo natural es “The meeting was delayed until next week.”

Pronunciación

Los insights señalaron package, restart, arrives y motorway. Modelos en IPA estadounidense: package /ˈpækɪdʒ/, restart /riˈstɑrt/, arrives /əˈraɪvz/ y motorway /ˈmoʊtɚˌweɪ/.
